Women In The Workplace

INTRODUCTION

Ever since the 18th century, women such as Mary Wollstonecraft and Emily Davison have fought to allow women equal rights. However there is still stigma attached to the woman in the work place today.

WOMEN IN POSITIONS OF POWER

In recent years it has been possible for women to reach positions of power in politics and in sports. The following women have all reached positions of power in different countries:

Margaret Thatcher became the first female prime minister of the UK in 1979 and held the position for 3 consecutive terms before leadership was transferred to John Major in 1990.

Another political leader who rose to fame was Benazir Bhutto. In 1988. Not only did she become the first female prime minister of Pakistan but also the first female to lead a Muslim nation.

Madeleine Albright became the first female to reach the rank of U.S. Secretary of State in 1997. This meant that she became the highest ranking female in the U.S. government.

In sport Lydia Nsekara became the first woman to be a member of the FIFA Executive Committee in 2012. She then went on to become the first woman to have been elected for a four year term with FIFA.

WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE

Even though there are a few women who have made the headlines by reaching these positions of power, there are far many women who struggle to make it to the top of their careers. Certain professions show that there are fewer women than men at the top of their field. These include professions such as:

It is not only these top job that shows of gender inequality of this kind but also lower paid male orientated jobs such as:

Many women who carry out this kind of work also find themselves to be victims of sexual discrimination even though they are protected by the 1975 Sex Discrimination Act. They are often described as women doing the work of a man.

CONCLUSION

It would seem that gender equality has come a long way since the first pioneers of the 18th and 19th century as there are more women who are able to hold positions of power in the work place. However look a little closer and it becomes apparent that old patriarchal views still dominate the male orientated work places.
